Nano-Milling Technology

What is nano-milling? From the VMA-Getzmann perspective, nano-milling is achieving particle size results below one micron. If your particle size requirements are above 1 micron the traditional bead mills are sufficient. The Dispermat nano-mills are a variation of the proven designs of the current Horizontal Bead mill and basket mill technologies.

The Dispermat SL-nano horizontal bead mills have the same features of their current ball mills. The primary modification is a new filtration system to allow for the use 0.1 – 0.3 mm diameter grinding media. Larger size beads can also be used. The high flow through is achieved by a pumping system that is attached to the milling chamber. A recirculation or single pass configuration is standard. The patented “C” technology can be ordered with all sizes. The “C” technology with the optional software documents the dispersion parameters and results. This information is very useful for R&D experiments and plant scale-up. A wide selection of chamber sizes is available from 50 ml to 2 liters. Explosion proof models are available. The milling chamber can be ordered with ceramic lining for corrosive materials.

The basket mill designs have been modified to provide nano-milling. The 1 liter basket system, TML1, and the 5 liter basket mill system, TML 5, are available in nano-versions. A finer screen at the bottom of the basket will allow for 0.2 mm diameter grinding media. The same advantages of the basket mill system described in the Media/Bead Mill section apply to the nano version. To achieve a proper flow of the mill base through a nano-basket mill the sample viscosity should be 500 centipose or less. The basket mill with a ceramic lining is also available.
